ParticipantSo I’ve seen a lot of the Sisters talk about their favorite authors and books here and would be really grateful for some suggestions. I’m fairly picky about good writing but otherwise will read just about every genre. I am also perfectly happy with fiction or non-fiction. No romance or self help books though please! As far as I’m concerned Romance can BITE ME and so can self help books. Ironically I was reading Deepak Chopra’s book ” The Spontaneous Fulfillment of Desire: Harnessing the Infinite Power of Coincidence” right before D-Day. Thanks Deepak. I’m pretty sure this situation is the EPIC failure of manifesting what I want out of life. 😛
So yeah…suggest away please.

MemberDiane Gabaldon’s Outlander series, starting with Outlander. Excellent writing and highly addictive. Louse Penny’s mystery series starting with Still Life. Wonderful writing, wonderful character development. I just started reading Life of Pi and am really enjoying it.
Liza – what happened to our book club? You’re slacking sweetie. 😉

MemberOh yeah, I loved The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet!!
October 27, 2013 at 4:58 am #115046katf
ParticipantOk, read the Outlander series and Pillars of Earth….have Kite Runner sitting around somewhere. Will look into others.
Daisy- I used to work in a bookstore and ended up reading the Outlander series and the Clan of the Cave Bear series at the same time. My coworker used to hold up the books and say “Time traveling Scottish sex or Caveman sex” to describe the two series. lol. Diana Gabaldon is a good author though.

MemberBev, I’m reading Life of Pi right now and loving it.

MemberI don’t know about the Outlander series. though I loved them…they leave you WISHING a man like Jamie really existed and all that great sex…..sigh. It will either inspire you to look for Mr Right or send you to the depts of despair. Pillars of the Earth- Fab… as are most of his books. There is an Irish writer who has written a bunch of comedies that are light and easy on the head and heart and make you laugh out loud in spots- Marion Keys I think? And I love Mark Haddon and Tony Palmer (sp) and his book My Favourite Wife and most of his others. They are both contemporary British writers.

ParticipantI’m pretty sure I dated Jamie in college. But he wanted me to go live on a farm and I wanted to be a filmmaker so it didn’t work out. Plus he had mommy issues.
I had amazing sex with my SAH….see where that got me.
I’m wracking my brains for suggestions but a good deal of my reading experience is with Sci Fi or Fantasy. I did check out Water For Elephants today. Thanks Bev.

MemberKat, do you have a Good Reads account? I find it’s a great way to get book recommendations in whatever your genre of choice may be. If you have one or get one, PM me and I’ll send you my user name so we can link up. I read across a lot of different genre’s. Anything and everything except Romance novels. 🙂 I have the final volume in Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series sitting on my shelf where it’s been for months. I can’t bring myself to read it because then it will be over for good. I love good Fantasy/Sci Fi too but with adult novels there tends to be a strong love relationship component so now I read a lot of YA Fantasy since they tend to focus more on strong female characters without so much of the love/sex stuff. Veronica Roth’s Insurgent/Divergent/Alligent trilogy is a great example of this. I thought these books were better than the Hunger Games books.

ParticipantDitto with Daisy for the Young Adult genre. I read a lot with my son. Not so much romance and sex and I can focus with my PTSD. Daisy had recommended Veronica Roth’s books to us and my son and I both loved them (doesn’t Allegiant come out this week?). But we like Hunger Games, too- although not at all happy with the climax of Mocking Jay.
We’ve also read John Green’s “The Fault in Our Stars” recently- really sweet story about 2 teens with cancer that fall in love. I liked “The Name of the Star”, “Never Fall Down”…Bat just read “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” and liked it. I love the Earthsea books. Have you read “Cinder”, Daisy?
October 28, 2013 at 2:36 pm #115054daisy1962
MemberTeri, Allegiant is out! I got it last week and will dive in as soon as I finish Life of Pi. L of P is a library ebook so I have to finish it before it expires. I haven’t read Cinder. I assume it’s a take off of the Cinderella story? I’ll look it up and add it to my “want to read’ shelf on Goodreads.
October 28, 2013 at 2:48 pm #115055teri
ParticipantYeah, Cinder is a sci fi Cinderella with a very unconventional heroine. We like the first one but have heard the follow up ones aren’t as good- just wondered if you had an opinion on that. We like ” I am Four” and “Micheal Vey”, too. Boy YA books are good bc they are more action, less romance! 🙂
