SPOILER ALERT: Don’t read this thread if you intend on watching it.
If you haven’t seen the movie Don Jon it’s a movie about porn addiction. It’s out in theaters now. It features an impressive cast including: Tony Danza, Scarlett Johansen, Julianne Moore, and stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as a single porn-addicted clubber. In spite of finding the girl of his dreams he cannot stop masterbating to porn.My husband and I decided to watch this movie because it was the only movie playing when wanted to go to the theater. What a SHOCKER! Watching with him was weird, and so uncomfortable I almost asked to leave. Then I realized that it would be worth my discomfort to stay, just so he could see how pathetic the whole porn thing is. The final scene with Moore had me holding my breath. I thought I was sexually dead, but now I know I’m not. Does that kind of connection really exist? Is it only in the movies? (I’ve been married 27 years to the same guy, no other partners)

I was thinking “okay, we get it, enough with the porn”, but maybe that was to demonstrate how pathetic it is? How unreal, distant, objectifying etc..?
I felt this movie portrayed women as dependent or needy in one way or another, and didn’t delve nearly deep enough into the damage it causes on so many levels. “Recovery” was grossly oversimplified, which was very disappointing. However, I have to say I’m glad to see a movie dealing with porn addiction. Awareness is good, but the message was weak.
October 13, 2013 at 1:27 pm #113247972MemberIt’s billed as a romantic comedy. I cannot think of anything less comedic or romantic than porn addiction. I’ll pass.

October 13, 2013 at 1:53 pm #113249sandyParticipantJust reading about it here almost takes me back to that awful place of living with it. The minimizing. The discovery. I don’t think I could watch a movie where there was any romantic connection with an SA. Too much of a trigger for my PTSD reactions.

October 13, 2013 at 2:48 pm #113251marchParticipantThat’s all I needed to know about it.
October 13, 2013 at 3:03 pm #113252moniqueParticipantPass. No thanks. I have enough triggers without paying to be triggered and feel sick for an hour and a half.
