I have been so depressed and having such horrid panic attacks that I rarely want to leave the house anymore. On top of that, I have felt AWFUL about myself, loathing what I see in the mirror each day, thinking to myself “SONOFABITCH! I used to be happy and beautiful”!
So one day I went out to buy cigarettes {I know, I shouldn’t smoke, please don’t bash}! and I ran into the gas station with my little one. The lady behind the counter asked me for ID? I started laughing thinking it was a joke; it wasn’t. I didn’t have my ID on me, so I told her “I KNOW I do not look 18 years old, just please sell me the cigarettes” and she said “I’m sorry, I have to scan proof of anybody who looks under 27”. I started laughing and said “Miss, I’m going to be 40 in February! I am way over 27” and she called her manager over who said to me “DOB please” so I told him. He then said to me “Perhaps the next time you do not have ID on you, you should pick an age that is believable”.
I never did get the cigs that dat, but I walked out of there feeling better about myself than I have in a long time. To me, it was a major compliment to have 2 people think I am more than 10 years younger than what I am, when all I see in the mirror is a beaten, weathered, ugly old woman.
Just thought I’d share my silly story.
{PS..I also had a starbucks employee ask me if I were single because he wanted to ask me out. Yet another bit of an ego boost as I was carting my almost 3 year old around after a LONG day}January 17, 2012 at 7:29 pm #26901lynngParticipantLOL, that’s perfect! Thanks for sharing!

you earned that moment and more!
Thanks for sharing.January 17, 2012 at 11:40 pm #26903ksondyParticipantI bet that is the first time you were happy NOT to get a cigarette!
It just goes to show that what you see in the mirror is not what others see. Our husbands actions certainly haven’t helped our perception of ourselves! How old did the guy at starbucks look?
Here you need to be carded for alcohhol at walmart if you look 40 and under. I never get carded. The day after my 40th birthday I get asked for ID. It was like, is this a joke? NOW that I AM 40 you ask?
They asked me for ID at the liquor store and I told the cashier that story. He said, “we card if you look 30 or under.” I told him, “YOU are my new best friend!!!”
My friend and I amused the guy because she bought a load of liquor. They needed a box to carry it. I asked her, “Why is it that every time you come here you buy so much alcohol?” Without missing a beat she said, “Because some of us don’t come here once a week like you do.” The cashier said, “OUCH!”
