ParticipantI’ve had a problem that I can’t seem to get myself moving on, so I thought you all could help. This is one of those PTSD brain just can’t sustain the effort. It seems so stupid, but here it is…
My washing machine has a problem. I called my home warranty program, and they sent someone out. He fixed it, but he noticed that something else was wrong. Since it was related, he counted it as part of the initial problem. Then when he fixed that, it turned out that there was still another related problem. (A coupling was bad, which led to a the brakes on the motor getting worn down and that had all led to another part wearing out).
Anyway, to fix the last part will cost $280- but I don’t have to pay it because it is part of my initial repair. Or the company will give me that money towards a new washer.
The repairman said he’d buy a new one, but not one of these newfangled ones with the computer boards because he gets called out on service for those all the time. He recommended I think a Roper Top Loader which is pretty much an old-fashioned model, not Energy Star, uses a lot of water, etc. But he says they don’t break.
I keep going round and round because having the repair guy fix it again is cheap and free, but there could be something more wrong when he fixes this. But buying a new one maybe is silly if I end up moving somewhere in the next year so Bat can do to college classes. What do you think?

ParticipantGet the new one. When things like washing machines start breaking down,it’s time for a new one. Even your repairman is recommending that. Just do it Teri. You don’t need any more headaches right now. I agree about the top loader. My Kenmore is 15 and has washed a million loads. I cloth diapered all of my kids. Just think of all the loads..And I have washed clothes for 6 people for all these years and I have only had one.repair for 80$. I will buy another Kenmore top loader when this one dies. Get the new one. That’s my 2ยข with change.LOL ๐

ParticipantI have a Whilpool top loader it’s about 2 yrs old. My Maytag top loader was 23 yrs old still working fine until the fire.

ParticipantI had an Asko stackable W/D that I bought used for $ 400 ($2000 new) from an apt building being completely gutted. It ran for another 8 years with one recurring problem that we would fix ourselves. When the dryer started to go I got my son the appliance salesmen to pick me out something and now have a maytag stackable that works well. (I don’t have a lot of room in the townhouse so the stackable was the way to go, I thought, esp. if I have to downsize even further). I have to say, that both the Asko and this Maytag are front loaders, and I swear my clothes are cleaner with the front loader.

ParticipantHey, it’s nice to talk about appliances. We should have an appliance thread.

MemberI need new washer and dryer both but just have not been interested in thinking about it. I like the look of the new front loaders and touch pads but I guessed that they have a dismal record of needing repairs ๐
Teri, I’d just get a new one. If you move then you can sell it for cash or use it in your new place.

MemberAbout 6 years ago I bought a big, fancy front loader. It felt good, but…………then I got the privilege of replacing it in just a few a few years. In part, I bought it so it would be easier on clothes. Could have bought a new wardrobe for the price of both machines.
I like to review consumer reports. Have a online subscription. Have had great results with cars and other appliances. CR helps me avoid paying a lot of $$$$$ for meaningless features. Have been replacing these items in rentals, my homes and for my disabled brother for years.
There is my 2 cents.

ParticipantI vote a new one. Anything you can get replaced before you leave, do it.

MemberI have had a Miele machine for 12 years. No problems at all. It is a front loader and used constantly. Not having a reliable washing machine for me would be like having trouble breathing. I have a sad life.

ParticipantI need someone to put stuff in the washing machine…

Participant:), Jos.
Thanks, everyone.
Monique, that is what the repair guy said- once they start breaking, it’s just one thing after another, usually
Desiree- I’ve always loved CR. I just don’t buy enough to justify a subscription.

MemberWhere else can you find a thread, “need advice on divorce and washing machines”? I wonder if anyone has ever Googled that?
I have a Maytag Neptune front loader and like it, except that the front loaders get smelly if you don’t leave the door open after you take out a load.

ParticipantI always leave the door open.
with front loaders and life in general.
Otherwise it does get smelly.November 13, 2013 at 2:09 am #116469lynng2
ParticipantGood one, Diane

MemberSo, if I leave the door open will the “smell” go away? That is essentially what I am doing…
Leave it to Diane to phrase it so well ๐

MemberMy sister bought new top loaders because she read there were more problems with front loaders. In Europe…they are ALL front loaders and they do wash the sh*t out of the clothes. In England my little washer heated the water as well. I could fit one queen size sheet at a time and boiled it regularly. I prefer the big top loaders in some ways…you can wash so much more? But they do use so much water. Washing machines and good vacuums are my thing. I can do without coffee makers and even a dish washer BUT a washer that works. Need that to keep my stress down.

MemberYears ago I had a front loader washer and it used to stink really bad. I was told that it gets mildew stuck in the rubber fold that seals the door shut. I used to brush a bleach and water mix and let it sit for a few then rinse it and do it on a regular basis. I don’t think I’ll get another one.
I like the new energy efficient top loading washers. I’d give anything to have a good washer. He’s ruined mine with his work clothes full of grease, oil, and hydraulic fluid. I’ve had some of my clothes come out with oil spots on them.
I think that’s grounds for a new set. If I ever get him out of here he can take this set with him!

ParticipantFor sure, Claire- you don’t want to wash your clothes in the same machine that cleaned his poopy pants.
I can’t wait to get new bedding, myself. I did a dumb thing and got a black light a few months after Dday. I washed the shit out of everything but it still glows. I have a King, so bedding is not cheap and I’m sure I won’t take it. I keep thinking there’s no point getting new stuff. But it really is something I should have done long ago.
