ParticipantHope she loses some major power over night and slows way down. We are at a good elevation in comparison to the sound, but still may lose power as we are supposed to have high winds. And of course there are trees everywhere around here. Keep your fingers crossed!! I know i am!! I am going to head out tomorrow morning very early to try to put some supplies together.

MemberGood Luck Flora! My Mom just missed the hurricane down in Florida. But she was ready anyway. Says it never fails that when she’s ready, it never hits!
I’ll keep you in my prayers. Keep us posted, if you can.

Participantwell… they’ve waived all tolls into Manhattan for Sunday… That’s my husband… risk one’s life in the middle of a hurricane, just because he can get a free ride! (oops… hang on… one of my eyes just rolled straight outta my head) ๐
Oh, and the CENTER of the projected path is set to go straight over our home (a place I call on my blog– “Whinyentitledton”, NY— self explanatory).
Dear Irene, if its not too much trouble, after you suck up my sucky husband, if you’re not too busy flooding all of our highways and knocking down all of our trees, could you please also suck up our corrupt school board and drunken town supervisor? (arrested for DWI, 2 weeks ago) That’ll do quite nicely.

ParticipantDear Irene,ย
I know you have other people to pick on! All my sisters have already been through sooo much! Please spend your time hunting down all the bad guys, assholes, boogie men, and most importantly, the SA’s. Do my sistas a favor!ย
Respectfully,ย
Silver Liningย
Dear God,ย
Please watch over my sisters, their families, their loved ones, their homes and communities. This also includes ZGirl who is in Irene’s path as she is visiting her mother and siblings. Wrap your strong arms around them and protect and spare them from harm!ย
Amenย
Love always,ย

ParticipantThanks guys. Lexie love it…suck up your sucky husband. I would hope for that too, although my baby is with my sucky husband. I want her home soon!!! Although i do not think i will get that. Went to the store, picked up foods and water. Ugh. Lexie is right, its heading straight for us, and split my state in half, rights getting high winds, left lots of rain. Not looking forward to this. Must clean the basement to prepare for flooding.

ParticipantShe’s making her way up to me right now and we just developed a leak in the roof. I’m hoping the wind will just blow the rain right the hell off the roof ๐
I’m sucking up all the electrify I can right now!! We all just took hot, hot showers. My husband just finished up the last load of laundry, the dishes are done and now we are just kicking back watching tv waiting for the power to go out. Fingers crossed we don’t have to much damage.
We are four miles from the coast so we know there will be flooding, we pray it won’t get into the house. Please keep us in your thoughts. My daughter is pretty scared. Thanks!

ParticipantYes, thinking of you SS…
Breaking news here in Whinyentitledton, NY (town I exist in–barely)
๐“Town declares a state of emergency as Hurricane Irene approaches.”
Well… its about effin’ TIME! ;( Our town has been in a “state of emergency” for years and years! corrupt bastards!
We’re pretty high up and its very hilly, but also heavily wooded, with very big, very old trees and all of the wires are above ground. We’ll lose power and have flooding.

ParticipantHi SS where are you at?
I measured, we are about a mile from long island sound and elevation of 60-70 feet. They are saying the storm is going to hit at high tide and its a very high tide. i know we will not get flooded, but like lexie worried about the trees. Our neighbors are staying, so if all else fails if one house gets clobbered by a tree we can go to the others house.Went to the store stocked up on water and junk food. Filled up the car with a tank of gas. Cleaned out the basement so I am ready if it floods. Hooked up a water pump again in case it floods. So having done all this, it won’t flood :-).
Keep you all posted. Flora

ParticipantUpdate from Flora – We still have power, a few trees are down in my yard, a really big one in my neighbors yard, but appears none hit any of our houses. It was pretty scarry a couple times with really big winds that were bending our large maple tree in the front yard, its basically bald now. yesterday it was a beautiful maple tree today you can see right thru it. Its still raining on and off, sideways. But i think the worst of the storm is over. I have opened the blinds to see the outside world again. I would not doubt it if we lose power later as they repair surrounding areas. But we survived. First thing to do after this is trim the maple in the front yard which toucehs the power line, that totally freaked me this morning. I had visions of the power line becoming slightly lose and our house going up in flames. I only slept about 3 hours last night, and watched our local new station basically the whole time, while the little ones slept. My dogs held it for about 18 hours, which is amazing as the puppy pees everywhere. They required coaxing to go out, they both looked at me like what are you crazy…i’m never going outside again. But at this time, winds have died down big time. Hope all the sisters are well.
Love,
FloraAugust 28, 2011 at 5:25 pm #17575nap
ParticipantFlora,
So happy to hear you are safe. Sounds terrible though and Im sure lots of damage around. Hope everyone else is safe too!August 28, 2011 at 6:41 pm #17576lexie
ParticipantWe lost power for about 12 hours which just came back on (duhhh) and we’ve even had some peeks of sun, but still mostly gray skies!
I was already exhausted last night, but got very little sleep with all of the wind and rain whipping around. I’m so EXHAUSTED!!!!!! It was really cool though. When I woke up, there was a teeny bit of light in the sky (we live on a hill and have a nice view outside the bedroom) and you could just hear the rain coming down in sheets and the faint outline of trees swaying quite dramatically back and forth. I’m surprised that more branches didn’t snap off! and then intermittent flashes of cloud to cloud lightening, but no thunder. This had already been going on for hours, but that was the peak, at that time, (for us around 6:00AM +/- ) Been through lots and lots of tropical storms and Nor’easters, but nothing this intense and for this long! Hope the power stays on. Sometimes with big storms, it goes and comes back on and then goes off again. xo
Still Standing??? She’s further south and most likely is still without power.
