ParticipantBev is the steamer 2 ft tall?
January 12, 2014 at 12:22 am #123022cbslife
MemberJust about, NAP
There’s a cheaper one on that same page that has 2 tiers instead of 3, it’s plastic, and it automatically goes to warm when the time is up. I think it’s a Hamilton Beach one.

MemberI avoided the plastic one because of carcinogens being in plastic and they are harder to prevent mold ( cleaning wise) than the stainless. The one I linked to is about 2ft tall BUT you do not have to use all 3 tiers. You can only use one or two to fit your purpose….
If cooking for one then I would put a chicken breast in the first bowl for 10 minutes and throw the rice/ veggies in the same bowl/tier for the next 15 minutes and call it a day.
Hell, you can eat out of the bowl. It all comes apart and stacks …. The only part that has to be hand washed is the base where the water goes.
Trish, you cracked me up 🙂
You too Liza 🙂

MemberClaire very sorry to hear about Dave. Electrocution…that is a weird one? He isn’t a drinker is he? I believe sometimes drinkers have small or big gastric bleeds that can leave old blood in the stomach? I am sure he will pull through and I hope unharmed.
Not all BP is caused by salt or fat. Those are extrinsic factors. Some people have high blood pressure from intrinsic factors….like internalizing TOO MUCH STRESS. Is good that you went on the medication and you should start walking. You can re examine the meds at a later date when your life has settled down. You have been living with an insane amount of prolonged stress. It is NOT good. And yes…your diet is crap too. If you can learn to raise donkeys you can learn to cook. Everything is on you tube these days. How can you live on a farm and eat frozen dinner? That just doesn’t make sense. 😉

ParticipantOk that sounds even better. I’m sold!

ParticipantKaren she can’t eat donkey.
January 12, 2014 at 1:50 am #123027cbslife
MemberBev, don’t get me wrong, I love the one you picked out. I’m just on a real tight budget and I thought NAP was, too.
Karen, I have 5 acres of hilly property. Only 2 donkeys which are pets, and 1 horse, which is a rescue. No farming here, too dry anyway, we are in a drought situation. No chickens, no cows, though we are surrounded by cattle, just not ours!
This is in no way an operating farm. The ground here is rock hard. Literally it has granite in it and lots of clay. So no gardening. It can be gardened, but the work it would take to do so is more than I can do with weak shoulders.Bev is being kind enough to help me eat healthy. The frozen dinners are just EASY. Since I’m running around this property all the time by the time I get in the house, get the dogs fed, I just want something quick and easy.
But Karen, I do believe you are correct in that my high blood pressure is caused by long term stress. It’s not always up. And before all this started, I never had a problem with it. In fact, I just had a physical last month, and all the lab work came out good. Cholesterol was good, sodium was good, blood sugars were normal. So, I have a tendency to believe this blood pressure situation is temporary. So I will follow your advice and stay on this low dose medicine and probably taper off when things settle down.

ParticipantIt’s easy to get into a routine with eating and sometimes you just need to shake things up. Which is really hard to do when you have so much trauma and drama going on. I have to really work to make myself plan and cook healthy meals. But I have to for Bat- I don’t know how I’d be doing on my own like you, Claire.
I’ve finally gotten back to buying at least one new fruit or veggie each time I go to the store like I did pre-dday. Bat and I have tried turnips and turnip greens, golden beets and beet greens, parsnips, rutabagas, purple kale, purple sweet potatoes, and fresh brussel sprouts (I’d only ever made frozen) so far this fall and winter.
I chop up the root veggies, put a little olive oil on them, and cook them at 400 for about 45 minutes. They are super easy and good, and you can make enough for a couple of days’ meals.
January 12, 2014 at 2:22 am #123029cbslife
MemberYep, it’s definitely easier when you have to cook for someone else. I wasn’t always this way!
And summertime is easier because I really like to make chicken salads and summer veggies. Right now, all the veggies look awful and they are so expensive.
I’ll definitely be planting tomatoes in pots this year.

MemberNo matter the reason, the steamer just makes it easy to get something decent on a plate without a lot of trouble.
I understand the budget and I figure any of them will do. I bought that one because I had to cook for my Dad and make it very simple for my mother 🙂
Claire, if you just get one ( and they may have them cheaper at Target or BBandB)… It shakes things up a little and you can eat something healthy. It’s also just so easy that it isn’t stressful to think about. Sometimes you just need simple 🙂
Take care of yourself just like you would take care of a child. Anything is better than frozen dinners 🙂
January 12, 2014 at 2:33 am #123031972
MemberIf I didn’t have the kids then I would live off beer, Crown and coke, and Cheetos 🙂
January 12, 2014 at 2:51 am #123032cbslife
MemberI ordered it. Now I just have to use it 🙂
January 12, 2014 at 3:46 am #123033liza

January 12, 2014 at 3:56 am #123034teri
ParticipantNot me.. I often heat up a bag of frozen brussel sprouts for dinner- that’s my comfort food.

MemberOne of the best things about our Oregon home is the Farmer’s Markets. They are’t in full swing yet but there is one nearby that we love.
January 12, 2014 at 6:00 am #123036972
MemberAnd for everyone’s green monster … jealous as hell… Teri looks like a million bucks 🙂
I wish I could consider a bag of brussel sprouts “comfort food” …..
Liza, maybe we should take an online nutrition class? Although , I like my “Bev Food Pyramid”. I’ll have to give this one some thought???
January 12, 2014 at 6:17 am #123037allcat62
MemberNo wonder you have such a good figure Teri. My comfort food has to be full of fat and sugar.

ParticipantWhere are you Claire?
I’m thinking about how to do a mission trip that makes a difference but I don’t feel called to Africa! Maybe I could come and cook a load of steamed meals and we could freeze them?!January 12, 2014 at 1:59 pm #123039nap
ParticipantRemember 5 a day. (5 servings of fruit or vegetable). For a
short cut, I like the small cans of low sodium V-8 juice anytime during the day and always have a glass of OJ in the morning. Birds Eye makes great frozen steam vegetables you make in the micro. My hair was falling out so I take a Once-a-Day vitamin for women and it’s helped alot. They make a petite size pill now (otherwise they were Hugh). I buy 100% whole wheat bread and love Uncle Bens Brown Rice. The have one that cooks in the micro in 90 seconds then I sprinkle with cheddar cheese lightly. That can be a meal in itself. If I cut up fresh apple (like Gala) and fresh pears I’ll add a small can of mandarins oranges and mix together and seal tightly in a bowl in the fridge. I like Dole sm can of Mandarine oranges and will mix the oranges with low fat cottage cheese. It’s really good too. You can tell I love food.January 12, 2014 at 2:02 pm #123040nap
ParticipantMy beer over the holiday was Shiner’s Holiday Cheer.
January 12, 2014 at 4:07 pm #123041lisak
Participantawesome claire! i’m glad you ordered it!! i think in the end you’ll find you’ll save money, premade dinners are more expensive than cooking for yourself.
way to go!

January 12, 2014 at 5:38 pm #123044nap
