ParticipantOk Sisters,
Maybe someone here can help or offer some insight. I had all of my tests done as soon as I left my SAH a couple weeks ago. Today I finally got to speak with the nurse about my results to which she informed me that my urine and blood all came back normal but that my pap showed positive for high risk HPV. The nurse informed me that though this would be concerning to me it was something that would not effect my future or my future partners.
How is that possible? Have any of you sisters had something like this come back?
Also, the test I was most concerned about they apparently don’t run…is anyone here aware of the issue with genital warts? Apparently the only way they “test” for that, a certain low grade HPV, is by diagnosing the presence of an actual wart so you could carry the HPV but not have warts? So confusing and frustrating…December 28, 2012 at 10:09 pm #66632lynng2
ParticipantI was told that the HPV was not routinely done, you have to ask for it even if you have requested a full panel of tests. Which I did (request the additional test). They all came back negative.
My SA did not do this when he went to get his tests, even though I told him it wouldn’t be included if he didn’t ask. It infuriated me because the least he could do is get the damn tests right. The HPVs are the MOST risky for me, because as a DES baby with some marked exposure traits I am at 10x risk for cervical cancer that increases exponentially with each additional sexual partner I am exposed to (my sexual partner, or -gag- his). I asked him to go back and get it. He did. All negative, thank GOD!!
You have to really know what you want and ASK for it, if you want to be sure.

ParticipantThey were able to test him for it? Everything I’ve heard and read says that men can not be tested for HPV.

ParticipantAll of mine came back normal too, but my pap had some atypical cells that were not indicative of HPV so I was told just to repeat the pap in a year. I will do it in 6 months because I do not like anything to be atypical in a physical/lab exam.

ParticipantIt’s a virus, and as far as I know you can test for exposure in blood tests. As far as whether it’s active, that I think is when they look for the actual warts/papilomas.

ParticipantSmart, Trish. Atypical means a close watch to me, too.

ParticipantWell, my HPV came back positive. And I have reason to be concerned about the HPV that causes genital warts as well. My husband had abnormal skin on his testicles which he said had been like that since he was a teen, before he was ever sexually active. I, obviously, don’t believe that now so…here we are. If it wasn’t enough to go through all of this shit now the stress of this has me damn near losing my mind…

ParticipantHPV can be detected by a blood test when it is inactive. When active, you will have an abnormal pap smear or warts (I understand that not all strains cause warts). I had an abnormal pap and had to have my cervix frozen to removed the abnormal cells a few years back. STBX denied any extramarital sex but now I have looked up one of his sugar babies from that time and she has cervical cancer (she is bald on her facebook page and has it posted).

ParticipantJesus Teri, I’m so sorry to hear that :(.

Participantdisenchanted – call the nurse back and get your questions clarified. You have every right as a patient to have your questions answered so that you are informed 100% and that you understand 100%.
December 28, 2012 at 10:23 pm #66641disenchanted
ParticipantTeri have you had any issues with it since then?
December 28, 2012 at 10:26 pm #66642trish
ParticipantI wonder if I should tell my sah that my pap came back showing atypical cells. You think he might fess up? He still denies sex with another woman.
December 28, 2012 at 10:26 pm #66643disenchanted
ParticipantShe answered them with the things I wrote in the first post :(. I’m going to try to get an appt. next week and push for them to do anything they need to to find out about the possibility of the HPV causing warts-the HPV they found on my cervix is apparently not that kind.
This all is so freaking unreal…December 28, 2012 at 10:28 pm #66644disenchanted
ParticipantI doubt he would. If you have HPV, causing the cell changes, it can apparently be dormant etc. etc. I would say he could talk in circles about the possibilities of where that came from if he wanted to, God knows mine tried to convince me this was all my past not his…yeah.
December 28, 2012 at 10:42 pm #66645trish
ParticipantMy Dr said it wasn’t HPV so I guess I just have atypical cells that need watching. It is all scary I think.
December 28, 2012 at 11:16 pm #66646lynng2
ParticipantIt is all scary, the best we can do is get tested, stay informed and keep using protection with SAs. It’s criminal what they get away with. Reckless endangerment is what I would call it, legally.

ParticipantDisenchanted, I am so sorry that your HPV test came back positive. I know that you must be angry, disappointed, and hurt. I have yet to get tested and I can not imagine my STBX wearing a condom. I do not even know where to go or what to ask for as I do not have medical insurance. My own husband would not put me on his plan. My thoughts are with you.
December 28, 2012 at 11:19 pm #66648lynng2
ParticipantCounty clinics usually offer these tests for residents. In our county you can get the full panel for $17. I have been told by many nurses they are the better place to get the tests in our county, as they run a more complete panel without being asked specifically.

MemberI went to a lab that takes cash to keep it off my insurance. I didn’t want a medical record following me around listing me as “high risk”. You never know when you might have to get your own insurance ,etc….I am probably a little paranoid, but the lab was fine. I’m sure the county health departments do a good job and they are probably pretty cheap everywhere. I’m just sick that any of us have to deal with this too….

Participantit just makes me sick… i’m sorry girls.

ParticipantHPV does NOT show up in the blood. The only accurate test for HPV is cellular, either from the warts or cervical cells.
Yes, you can have HPV with no symptoms and no warts. If you have atypical cells (which means the virus is active) in your pap smear then your doctor can test the cells to see if you have the HPV virus and they can also tell you the types you have and if they are the types that put you at risk for cervical cancer.
There is no blood test for a man or a woman that will determine if they are positive for HPV, and even if there were, there are literally hundreds of varieties and only dozen or so are implicated with cervical cancer.
http://www.cdc.gov/std/hpv/stdfact-hpv-and-men.htm
Your pap smear may show normal for years, then suddenly show up atypical or even worse, and then it can revert back to normal.
No matter what it shows, once you have been diagnosed with HPV you will always have it and you will always be at risk.
It does not always show up right away. You could be infected and it will not show up for years.
If you have not had any other sex partners, and you were clean before you met your husband, and if you show up positive at any time then it is 100% certain that he gave it to you.
Larry infected me with HPV, I also did have the visible warts, I was treated with cervical cryotherapy and now my pap smears vacillate from normal to atypical.
That means that I will always be at high risk for developing cervical cancer.
So please, dear Sisters, have regular pap smears and know that if your husbands have been out fucking around they have probably infected you with HPV. ~ JoAnn

ParticipantI think there’s an antibody titer for HPV, isn’t there?
When I went in for my STD checks, it was all blood tests. My doc told me they all came back neg except HPV, which we already knew I had. So not sure how all that makes any sense.
I haven’t had any problem since the cryo.
When I was diagnosed with HPV, it was before I knew about STBX’s skin-to-skin activities. I asked him a number of times if I had gotten it from him, and he flat out denied having done anything, swore it could not be from him. Ob-gyn had told me that I could have gotten it earlier and it could have been dormant. He said up until a few years ago, they had thought it was always new contact. So I let it go. Until I saw the bald sugar baby.
Now I don’t care if I got it from him or not. I COULD have. He was putting my life and those women’s lives in danger. Whether or not I actually caught something is beside the point really. That was just luck. What matters is what he chose to do- not take my safety seriously.

ParticipantOh geeezzz…just remembered – early on in our marriage before kids, I had an atypical pap and had to have cryo surgery on my cervix. Bastard. Still haven’t had a formal disclosure…but I’m sure it’s all related. Gag.
